Tourism posters have one job: sell their destination. A few weeks ago, we shared Jamaica\u2019s <\/span>most iconic tourism poster<\/span><\/a>\u2014Sintra Bronte emerging from the water in her Jamaica tee shirt, which definitely fulfilled its duties.<\/span><\/p>\n

While not all posters promoting the island have enjoyed such fame as that 1972 campaign, they\u2019ve still shown Jamaica to be the gorgeous destination we call home. Beginning this month, we\u2019ll take a look back at the creative work of the Jamaican Tourist Board in a series dedicated to the ads and the stories they shared. Many of the ads are so gorgeous that we\u2019d consider them art!<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, we\u2019re taking it back to the very first works of the tourist board, it’s 1955 \u201cCome to Jamaica\u201d campaign, meant to help double Jamaica\u2019s tourism in five years\u2014a feat it successfully completed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Leisure travel was on the rise in Postwar Europe and America, and Jamaica\u2019s white sand beaches, scenic mountains and tropical climate gave it the reputation as the Caribbean\u2019s most sought-after destination.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are the ads that brought travelers from across the globe to Jamaica in 1955:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This poster refers to the \u201cBritish colonial setting\u201d of Jamaica. The island only gained independence in August of 1962.<\/em><\/p>\n

The 1950s were a big year for pirates in the Hollywood film industry. Films such as \u201cPeter Pan,\u201d \u201cTreasure Island\u201d and \u201cThe Buccaneers\u201d were all released during a six-year span. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
